Ok so, when I hit my 4x4 I hear clicking and tinkering away in my trunk region *I believe thats where my tansfer case is...im not really sure whats back there*

Nothing happens

I keep clicking it, and clicking it like 2 mins worth, and my 4x4 will come onand work fine, my drive shaft locks fine, and i can hear it unlock when i back up.

Wtf is wrong with this, as of now my low range does not work.

sounds like your shift motors is on its way out

I should mention that from atleast august to the end of January my 4x4 never worked. *probably much longer then august, the people i bought it from said it didn't work at all*

It has just begun to work recently and im not entirely sure...why.

From age and lack of use, the shift motor on these sometimes simply gets dirty inside, and the motor has difficulty rotating the shaft. Perhaps your persistance is getting the shift motor to sometime find the strength to make the shift happen, I don't know. You could try tapping the shift motor, as that will sometimes loosen things up a little, but I expect what you really need is to pull the shift motor, take it apart, and clean it up. Search this, as we have a couple of good write-ups on how to do this.

shift motors are a big flaw on these.
first thing is try electrical contact cleaner.. make sure you have good contacts. If that don't help you I know it ran me 90$ to have a new one put in at a tranny shop. I didn't feel like tring to resplice the one wire that is not apart of the wiring harness. :)

I agree with mrshorty. Search is your friend here, there are pictorials that walk you through this stuff.

There is a controller / computer in the trunk area that controls the 4x4. The t-case motor is sort of under the back seat area (obviously, under and outside of the truck).

BTW, Welcome to the site.

Mike

There could also be a problem with the electrical box that controls when the 4x4 kicks in and out. It makes a clicking sound when you push the button on the dash.

I'm not sure what your reply means lol

Sorry just got out of work after 12 hours little tired, I meant to type, yes it makes a clicking noise when I hit the button for the first few times, then it will finally engage.

When I read it the first time i thought you had it in a question as in Is it making a clicking noise when you press the button.

Lol i completely understand what it feels like to try to read something and understand it after 12 hours haha. If that box doesn't engage the motor then your problem is in the controller, but like the other guys have stated, its probably the motor. I'd check both of them though.

Thank you guys very much, this site is the best.

How are you trying to engage 4x4 Low?

From the 4x4 Trouble shooting guide:

4x4 Low
To engage or disengage 4x4 Low you must:
  • 1st be in 4x4 high
  • Transmission in Neutral
  • Clutch depressed (manual transmission)
  • Foot on Brake (mph<3)
  • Now Press 4x4 Low

Yeah thats how I am doing. Nothing is registering though.

After putting it into 4x4 H and pressing 4x4 Low fails to enage 4x4 low then you'd need to start looking at the switch, 4x4 shift module, and wiring to ensure they are working correctly. On some older vehicles the 4x4 buttons stopped working because the previous owner(s) really pushed the crap out of them trying to get 4x4 working.. If you push too hard you can cause the contacts inside to separate to the point they no longer make contact when the button(s) are pressed.
