I want to take the radiator looking thing in front of the radiator off. I believe its for the A/C, I dont use that so I figure it could only help, the radiator, by getting it out of the way.

I'd post a pic, unfortunalty I can't for some reason. But I'm sure this isn't really a hard thing to discribe, but I could mistaken.

Thanks.

I believe that's your transmission cooler

I think he is refering to the a/c condenser. You can remove it if you do not use your a/c and you have evacuated your system of refrigerant. The only drawback is the condenser in a way protects your rad from damage.

It does protect it, but the other side is wide open and it looks fine.

I was worried about it being tranny related.

I can't get pictures up on here. But how would I know if it was eather of them. Hoses, ect that would differ? I don't know where my trans is, but I know how to check the fluid, I just dont know where to put in the fluid. But thats not this.

In this picture, there are two coolers mounted in front of the radiator. If it looks like any of these (either as its pictured or rotated 90 degrees), then it is the cooler for the transmission. Since you have a 94 Explorer, then you probably have one that looks like the one on the driver's side except rotated 90 degrees (the one that has its ports wrapped with paper towels).

Oh, well I only have the one on the drivers side. Should I have the both of them? Is it that important or would it just make it better?

I was only looking to remove a bit of weight for better GM. I'm looking to take a road trip from here in boston, accross the country, so any little bit of weight would help.

By the way that pic is nice man.

No you are only supposed to have one - I had two because the other one was for the full-hydraulic steering.

As for trying to save weight - the cooler doesnt weigh that much because, except for its mounting tabs, its mostly aluminum. Empty, it only weights maybe a pound.

I'm more or less thinking in long distance every pound counts.

hey, but thanks man.

If you are that worried about saving weight for gas mileage that a pound or 2 matters to you, then consider this: a gallon of gas weighs about 8 lbs. So if you have a 20 gal tank thats 160 lbs. Why don't you just stop at every single gas station you pass and only put in a few onces of fuel. ;)

cause that would ruin the fuel pump silly ;)

I think the point is that you could clean the contects out of the center console and remove as much if not more weight than pulling the cooler off. Is it weight, yes. Will it make a difference? You'd need a nuclear physicist to calculate the fuel savings from removing a 1lb. cooler. If you stop at 3 restaurants with raised parking lots that you have to drive up the entrances/exits to get to, you'll wipe out your entire fuel "savings" :D

But, If you don't use the A/C, sure, you can pull it as was stated above.

Thanks yall. I'm just gonna start charging people per weight, I feel bad for my big boned friends.

I dunno if the first gens have this but slide under your vehicle on the driver's side and look at the bottom of the gas tank. If it has a skid plate, this is probably 20 or 30 pounds worth of steel and is probably useless unless you plan to go off roading.

Say I do at some point, is it easy off easy on?

It takes maybe 20 minutes - you just need a friend or at least a jack to support the weight of the stupid thing while you work on the bolts.

You can use one of your big-boned friends! They're generally pretty strong. You can offer them a free ride in your Ex as repayment... :D

If you are calling it a radiator looking thing, put the tools down and call a professional.

Water weighs 8 lbs a gallon. Fuel weighs 6 lbs per gallon, That is why fuel floats.

Hahahaha, believe me I thoght that same thing, but I just got this truck, and it's my first car, with lots of work to be had. If I called a professional I might as well have called up a dealership and bought a new truck. I've grown to love my car, and the thought of someone elce playing with her is not one I'd like to have for long. Unfortunatly I don't have my own garage so I would have to take it to the shop for jobs that I can't do on the side of the road with my tool bag, ratchet set, and my best big boned friends to assist.

Haha, yup. I got em' lined up. It's a big line.:p::D

If it's about half the width of your radiator and it's on the drivers side with two 3/8" id rubber hoses coming out of it that connect to two 3/8" od tubing, then that's your transmission cooler (keep it). If it's about the same width and in front of your radiator, that's your ac condensor. It really doesn't weigh that much, but removing it should improve air flow to your radiator, and you'll be amazed at what's stuck in between the ac cond and the rad. If you're removing the condensor, you might as well remove the compressor - there's some weight. Warning: AC system could be pressurized, Don't hack into it without first evacuating it.

You could also get smaller tires and ditch the spare!
