I have a 2002 Explorer. It has 102,000 miles. Now that the temperatures have dropped into the teens and single digits, I seem to be getting a buzzing sound. At about 2,000-2,500rpm under light load I get a high pitched whine. It will go away after a while when warm.
My friend is a retired Ford Master Mechanic. I have not had him actually look at it yet, but from the description he believes it may be the torque converter.
Anyone have opinions regarding this? He told me if I were to bring it in, they will probably want to do more than just replace the torque converter at this mileage. Am I looking at fairly expensive transmission work?
Thanks.

The transmissions have servo bore issues. So if the trans is coming out, it may be advantageous to fix them. Me though, I'd just replace the torque converter.

I'd also get a second opinion from a reputable trans shop. Of course, don't tell them you think it's the TC. See what they come up with.
I'm doubting the converter issue.

Number4, what do you think the problem might be?
I won't have time to bring it for a check till the end of the week.
