1998 Mercury Mountaineer
Hi, I've read through most of the forum and have found threads that touch on my problem, but none that address it.

I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer AWD 5.0L V8. I've been getting the P0153 code off and on for about 3 months.

I read on another forum that bad gas caps can cause the problem, well, I've replaced the gas cap with a new OEM one and that seemed to help stem the tide a bit.

As it often seems to pop back up when the tank is 1/4 or less, I fill the tank, and that helps some. But it still happens.

This Thursday, 2 days after I changed the spark plug wires, it began misfiring on the #6 cylinder and the P0153 code came back and stayed on.

I swapped the #5 & #6 plugs, cleaned up the area and reinstalled the wires with dielectric grease. No more misfire, but the code did not clear.

So, I also changed the O2 sensor that kept kicking off the code. I used the OEM, Bosch O2 sensor.

I started it and it ran beautifully. Next day, I was driving and that damn code came back. I stopped and had breakfast, it was gone.

Off and on all the rest of the day, disappearing even while I was driving.

It was gone for a couple of weeks and now it's back again.

I've got the readings from the computer if that helps.

What gives????? Any ideas?

Fuel filler necks are notorious to rust on these vehicles. I never got codes from it though.

mine looked clean also until I removed the rubber hoses from it and that's where it was rotted and broken off was in the hoses. Figured I would add that in case you haven't checked that

P0153 Possible causes:
- Faulty Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2
- Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 harness is open or shorted
- Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Inappropriate fuel pressure
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Intake air leaks
- Exhaust gas leaks

Tech Notes:
Replacing the Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 usually takes care of the problem.

Bank 2 sensor 1 is the driver's side before catalytic converter. Which one(s) did you replace.

I cleaned the connector with electrical cleaner when I replaced the O2 sensor.

Down-tube is new.

I replaced sensor 1, bank 2. Had to take apart everything in the console to access the panel.

It might be that you have a bad connection either at the O2 sensor, at the PCM or a bad wire in between.

How can I check those? What do I need, or where can I find information on how to do it?

A VOM with continuity setting and a wiring/pin-out diagram would be a good place to start.

Thank you.

The issue was a bad sensor wire. New sensor installed. codes disappeared forever.
