I've been "trolling" this site for a while, and am finally ready to purchase an Explorer. My two ooptions are a 99 chestnut EB or an 01 black Sport. SOHC for both. They are similarly priced. I'm young with no family, and like the apperance of the sport, but would'nt mind the convenience of 4 doors. Anybody gone one way and have regrets? Also while looking at the EB i changed the 4x4 setting from auto to high, then to low, while sitting in the lot. The dash indicator showed the change to high, but when switched to low, the display did not light. It seemed as though I "felt" the change to low, but has anyone run into a similar problem? Thanks in advance for you input.

sorry, wrong topic

newbified!

sometimes it won't go to low until you change gears and get ready to move. I am sure it has something to do with the pressure on the drivetrain or something to that nature.

go with the 2001 black sport....... i need another buddy. :) ... But really man i love my truck sure 203 horse power makes you wonder alittle bit but its a powerful truck oh and im sure our 4X4 low system is tops of any stock car or truck out there, i was out in the snow with that baby and its better then my moms 98 xlt was and the one before that and is sure a hell of a lot better then her lex 300rx. well im sure this didnt help but anyway

It won't go into Low unless the transmission is in neutral with your foot on the brake.

4 lo

Robert is right, if you don't put the thing in neutral and stomp on the brake pedal it won't shift into 4 lo this is to assure that the car is completely stopped.:D

sometimes for my 96 eddie bauer the light either wont on for 4 low even though i feel the switch. and sometimes the lights will go off, though the chain is still on. anyone have any anwers. guys have looked at it and said the 4wd is fine, just wondering why the lights sometimes go off, and even on occasion they will both flash, but i check it out and nothings wrong. any ideas what this is?

as for regrets or anything...
i have a 99 sport. i bought it during college and got the sport because i thought.. "i won't ride in the back so i don't care if it is harder to get into" well.. i made a good choice! i've never riden in the back. i make people get in on the passenger side so i never adjust my seat.. although my wife does.. but that's another topic. i don't have kids and if i did, we would use her car to haul them around. even so, its easy to get in the passenger side because the seat slides up pretty far. i don't have a single regret about anything. well.. i did switch out the monoleaf for a spring pack from a 4dr.. but that doesn't really count as a regret since it only cost me $75.
i also like the sport's appearance better.. so that had a lot to do with it.
i think the 4drs back seats split 60/40 while the sport does a 50/50. either would be fine with me. mine are both down 85% of the time anyway.
good luck with the purchase!

Check fuses

When i installed my new stereo my lights for my 4wd would be on but dim i checked the fuse box and there was a 10 amp fuse blown, i replaced it and nothing else has come up with the switch.

i'll try that. thanks.

i would buy the 99 Eddie bauer. i love the looks and featrues of the Eddie bauer. The message center console is cool, the nicer seats, and the nice tow-tone exterior. Also some of the eddie bauers have air suspension which i would really love to have. 4 doors ride smoother then 2 doors generally and I am glad I got my 4 door because you can fit an extra person and it's easier fo rpeople to get in. i have my truck full with people often so it's nice to know I can seat more then my friend's jeep wrangler.
As for the 4X4 not going into low...as others have said it won;t switch unless you got it in neutral and the brake on...i thought it was that way for 4X4 high also, but i guess not.

i have a 96 eddie bauer and love it. it has about 110,000 miles and still runs great. one thing i love is the center console computer which tells you things like the gas mileage and miles until empty, as well as many other useful things to look at while driving; it is the main thing i will miss in a new car. for teh same price, i would go with a little older EB over a sport, because they look better and the nice extras are well worth two years of newness, as well as the whole 4 door thing; just my opinion.

Go with the Sport.

I've driven Blazers and Cherokees for about the last 15 years or so. Looked at a Ford Lightning and a GTP.

Decided the 2WD Lightning wouldn't make it as a daily driver in the winter and couldn't stand the thought of driving a car everyday.

I wound up with a Black 01 Sport with <30K miles.

I have a black '99 sport and love it to pieces.

Okay we are not of much help.
Many differances of opinion here.
( that is what keeps things fun and ohnest )

I also am single with no family, I love the Sport.
You can still take three of your buddies crusin'
It does have less storage but it is a bit more manuervable.

Think about how you intend on using it.
What do you plan on hauling and carrying ?
Are you going to mod it for off road or street ?
Either will do you well, but I personally like the look of the Sport.

On the flip side, my mom and I drove to NC to camp with 3 weeks of clothing and extras (camping etc) plus stuff for my bro's college dorm, and we fit 2 people relatively comfortably with all that stuff. It can certainly fit alot, but you must sacrafice seating or comfort.

We had a sport for a couple of years until our second child was born. That's when we decided to build the 4door. I love to look of the sport.

I'd go for the sport, not that it really matters since this thread is about a year and a half old. :)
