My son was drving the '02 4 liter--cruise on, uphill--he says all the dash warning lights came on, she droned out of power and he pulled off the road. It wont's start, and it turns over quite slowly. (but, he was out on the road all night, not sure if he has run down the battery some.)

Other than the obvious timing chain failure--has anyone here ever had a coil fail while driving? or computer module?

I say that because i thought I saw a spark at the base of the coil/distributor while he was turning it over and I was looking under the hood. But--it could also be the slapping of the now open ended timing chain on the cover that is making a popping noise as it goes 'round and hits the top.

Any other experiences would be great to hear about before I disassemble this thing--I really didn't want to rebuild another engine . . . .this, btw, if our seventh Explorer in the family. First time I've lost a timing chain on the 4L if that's what it is.

no start

buy a spark tester, test for spark them take the valve covers off and crank it over watch and c i doubt the chains are broken if it is turning over, it is probably something else if chains r ok test alt and battery at autozone or checkers or whatever, then ........
