Outside Temp Gauge Reading Way Off After Windshield Replacement?

Hi All,

After having my windshield replaced (non-dealer), the outside temp gage LED reading that is displayed is now always like 20-30 degrees too high. Has anyone encountered this before?

Last February my temp reading was way off. It was 20 degrees out and the display was reading 58 degrees. I replaced the ambient temperature sensor and it works like a charm now. The sensor is located behind the grill on the passenger's side. I removed the grill and had easy access. Took about 10 minutes to change it. I paid about $20 at the dealer. Here is what it looks like:

I don't know if your X uses the same one as mine but Rock Auto has it for the '02 priced at $11.79 or $6.29 for closeout with a 30 day warranty here:

If your temp is displayed on an overhead console then maybe a wire or connector got knocked loose when the windshield was installed. A couple of thoughts to get you started. Hope this helps out.

For what it's worth - the outside temp display in my '04 reads too high when driven in city traffic with a warm engine, even in the winter. It's even more off in the summer with the AC on in stop and go driving. It needs sustained driving above 30 or 40 MPH to get an accurate reading.

The jeep cherokee that I used to drive had it's outside temp sensor mounted on the bottom of the front bumper - and it always seemed accurate. I have concluded that the the temp sensor on our Ex's is in a dumb location and have plans to someday relocate it away from the radiator like jeep did.

n2epv, maybe your sensor needs to be replaced. The temp on mine only fluctuates a couple of degrees even when sitting in traffic. Like I said, I replaced mine in February. I got the truck in Feb and the temp sensor was bad so I have no earlier data to compare with. I checked rockauto.com and it appears that your X takes the same sensor as the '02.
