I know many of US explorer owners have this problem, well mine started flashing about 30K, I now have 80K, I have never took it in except to have the Code pulled PO741 to find the problem, well after prolonging the problem, the light started to flash often (usually anytime I drove more than 20miles er so), after reading some bulletins or other mechanics advice, I pulled the Transmission pan, and replaced the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid (on the drivers side after you pull the pan), this took me about 1hr and transmission fluid in the face and hair, but the light has not come back on SINCE and the code is no longer present. My advice to you is if you have this problem and you've have the code pulled and its PO741, save yourself an expensive TRANSMISSION Rebuild, and try this route for $60, according to www.alldata.com and the Technical Bulletins there was some sort of problem with this solenoid. This fixed it for me, Hopefully this will help you.

THANK YOU !!!
I thought I was going insane w my Ranger..
After you drop the pan, I have done before so I know whats up with that, What does this solenoid look like ??? wires ..part numbers etc.
Thanx for the heads up....

I also noticed you have a 97..was it the 44R4e tranny ? If so it is the same as my 95 Ranger (search my ID and read my tale of woe).
I owe you a big one if this is it...
Thnx.

Here is what the Technical Bulletin Says, even though mine was built in May of 97, it still fixed the problem. The solenoid, is just a small thing with 2 wires on it, once you pull the Transmission pan and pull off the filter, you can EASILY remove it, it is the front solenoid closets to the front of the drivers side of the vehicle

ISSUE:

A flashing Overdrive (O/D) light with Diagnostic Trouble Codes
(DTCs)
P0741 and/or P1740 may be evident. Torque
Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid lot numbers 769 and 771 may have
damaged
crimping points on the pintle. This allows
the disc to move, causing the TCC solenoid to malfunction.

ACTION:

Perform normal diagnostics and inspect the TCC solenoid for lot
number
769 or 771, broken crimping points, movement of
the pintle and/or a broken TCC solenoid bracket. If any of these
concerns are present, replace the TCC solenoid. New
parts outside of lot number 769 or 771 do not have the crimping
point
damage concern. Refer to the following Service
Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Some vehicles may exhibit an O/D light flashing with DTC P0741
and/or
P1740.
1.Perform normal diagnostics.

present,

3.Inspect the following areas (refer to Figure 1):
a.Crimping points broken.
b.TCC solenoid bracket broken.
c.Lot numbers 769 or 771 present.
d.Pintle may be moved in and out.
4.If any of the above concern areas are present, replace the TCC
solenoid.
5.Erase the DTCs and verify the repair.

This is curious, you have a 97, undoubtly built BEFORE the 10/97 date. But this solved your problem? I have the 95 but it is a 4R44E tranny in the Ranger.
The only thing I would hate is the 5 qts of Redline that I would lose when I drop the tranny ...
Oh well, beats the crap out of $1400..
THNX alot.
