I have a 93 F150 pickup with a 5.0 engine and 118K miles on it. At around 65 k, a fluttering shift started when shifting into overdrive. A quick visit to the tranny shop and consultation with the man revealed that I could expect to have probs at or around 90K. He gave me some stuff to put in the tranny to help. Up to this point, my habits were to leave tranny in overdrive all the time and let nature runs its course. After this occurance started, I changed my habits. I now leave the tranny out of overdrive at all times unless I am on the flat open road without a load . So far so good.

I also have a 97 Explorer with the 5.0 engine and AWD. It has 109 K at this time. It started to flutter on the shifting somewhere around 70 - 80 K. I now practice the same habits. OD on open roads only. So far so good. (fingers crossed)

The question I really need to know: Is there a way to electrically or mechanically permantly disconnect the OD or do I have to keep hitting the button all the time?

BTW: This is a gr8 forum !

Thanks

Since your AWD tranny (4R70W) is electronically controlled, you should be able to do that. You could probably get an 'OD Delete' burnt into a custom Apten Chip. Search this site for the "Apten Chip" and a guy named Brian is the one who programs them. I know he said something about deleting the PATS system in the '98+ Explorers and I heard he can do EGR too. But who knows..

Welcome to the site!

yep, I could do a two program chip and have one of the programs be "OD delete".

Or you could just retighten the valve body bolts to factory specs and fix the problem altogether on both trucks :D

It's a common problem on the AOD/4R70W tranny.

Jason_25 is right, i think i saw a "how to" thread on another Ford site...

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm going to do the search on the Apten Chip to grasp a better understanding on how and what the chip does.

Thats what I like about this forum.....gives a guy a chance to gain some knowledge by the real experts!

Thanks again!

Jason,
Do you still have the link to whatever board it was that described the valve body tightening fix? I thought I had it under my "favorites", but I don't. Thanks!

Robb
