I want to remove the overhead console in my 08 STA, to tap into a power source from the window or sunroof switch. How is the console trim attached? I assume there may be hidden screws or? Need some help here, thanks.

Ever figure this out? One of the map bulbs on Pop's STA blew, and I cannot get my fingers in the space. Removing the light lens is useless IMO.

No I have not gone further in trying to remove the overhead assembly, as I dont want to break a hidden tab or something. I have ordered a factory assembly manual and perhaps that will help.

If the map lights blew on your new STA just take it to the dealership and let them to the warranty work.

Why would you bother spending your time and money on something that can be done for free? /boggle

Time, the bulb is about 80 cents from a parts store, I am more careful with the paint, interior, etc. when working on it, etc.

But, after enough frustration, including pulling the overhead console (only to find the top of the bulb area is covered, too), he'll be taking it in.

The STA is from a dealer about an hour away, but he has to go that way next week anyway. Personally, I have little faith in taking a vehicle to a non-selling dealer (especially, with respect to my '04, after I had one tech ask me, "why don't you take it to the dealer you bought it from?" when I questioned their BS "could not replicate" problem conclusion). I didn't want to have Pop have to schedule an appointment, wait, have the chance of some less-than-careful tech scratching his door or the like, etc.

So, exactly how did you remove the overhead console? Please enlighten me!

Sorry!

It's held in by four clips in the four corners. The rear of it has the clips on the console itself, and the front has the clips in the headliner. Starting from the rear left or right, apply downward pressure until the console rear clips release. (The center of the console is the "loosest"--stick your fingers in and work then to the left/right.) After that, with downward pressure the fronts should come out easily because they're attached to the headliner and not the console. When reinstalling, there is a guide-prong on the front that you insert into a hole in the headliner.

Don't give it an old-fashioned yank because if you succeed and rip it down, you'll also rip out the sunroof/lighting/rear window/mirror wires.

I ended up replacing the bulb using needle-nose plyers and a lot of profanity. So, all's well that ends well.

YEAH BABY! I am a happy camper now! Thanks! I tapped into the yellow ignition only powered wire for the sliding back window. Now the Escort powers on only when the truck is on, with no unsightly cord draped across the dash and console.:D
