05 4.0 here. Read and read and dug and dug online cannot find same situation although many in lines of what I have going on, but not entirely the same. Too many generic answers/replies.

I am overheating only when the a/c is on. it is not instant usually is around town or when off the highway and sitting at a light.

replaced the coolant twice, new cap, checked stat, checked radiator, new plugs, wires, etc. All components seem to be good. fan has resistance. Cleaned condenser and radiator which were not clogged. Also checked for head gasket issues and found it to be all good so ruled that out as well.

only parts I can say appear to be is the belt tensioner. at idle it rattles and moves way too much. confident also have a vacuum leak at idle too waiting for my new smoke machine to arrive to diagnose that.

Could a bad tensioner slash loose belt cause this?

Thats the odd thing is there is no efan on this truck. Dont recall working on any other car without at least an ac condenser fan. Baffles me but i am not a ford fan all chrysler.

can someone confirm whether these explorers 05/06 4.0 is suppose to have a efan? all other vehicles i have worked on which is 100's regardless make model have had two separate fans in various combos.

I have an '05 with a 4L engine, and it is a cold blooded beast. No electric fan, but I can't get the top hose hard running for 90 minutes in Florida at 90 degrees with the dual air going full blast. I would say you have a real problem if you have used up all the excess capacity of that cooling system.

Stuck thermostat, also check the plug to the fan clutch, it likes to come off if you bump it. Belt driven fan with an electronic clutch that kicks in when needed.

I double checked everything again today, did the magazine trick to the fan and i can stop it at operating temp with or without ac running, so fan clutch is bad. just ordered a oem from amazon.

Yes the oem one was 91 free shipping cause I'm a prime member. Rock auto charges tax and shipping so would had been more and waited longer to arrive.

Just so you all know amazon is cheaper than 99% anyone else if you factor in prime. I am a weekend mechanic and buy my parts all oem mopar and Ford from them mostly and save alot. I buy my oil and coolant from them too free same day shipping
