I couldn't find any info on sensor locations for 4.0L - I've got a P0060 and P2272 and am hoping a new sensor will do the trick. I've read driver side exhaust pipe but a little more detail would be helpful. Maybe someone could post a "sticky" on all o2 sensor locations for the various models? - or is there already one? Thanks.

Normal scheme

The normal number scheme is bank 1 is the bank that contains cylinder #1 which is on the passenger side. The sensor closest to the engine is sensor #1 and the number increases toward the rear. However, there are some unusual numbering schemes and the following link contains a diagram for the 2001 V6 which may be similar to yours. ford explorer rough start up then runs fine.

Thanks for the info - the link has a good diagram. I wonder if the 3rd gens have the same configuration?

Researching the code -- I'm looking for Bank 2 / Sensor 2 location. Thanks.

i'm not sure about an 02, never worked on one, but in general the second o2 sensor is located a few inches past the catalytic converter, it's job is to tell the ECU how well the CAT is doing, and bring on the check engine light if the cat is failing. which leads to another point, that an error code pointing to that o2 sensor could also indicate a failing catalytic converter.

I called two Ford dealers today and asked where Oxygen 2/2 sensor is located. Both said passenger side behind cat after some deliberation. I replaced sensor and code is back! I used a Bosch sensor @ half the price of OEM but is that a possible problem? I read 2/2 was driver side - anyone know for certain? Also, is there a fuse for sensor(s) and if so where is it located? Thanks for your time and any help is greatly appreciated.

Anyone w/ any Sensor experience? There seems to be some debate where 2/2 is on a 4.0L? Fuse location? Thanks.

I said it already but i'm going to say it again, it's probably not the sensor which is failing, it's probably the catalytic converter. i believe they throw the same code (since that sensor reads output from the cat)

Thanks for the tip, again. If a faulty O2 sensor and a faulty Cat throw the same code -- Ford has done it again - engineering ignorance! Is there a way to check and confirm the Cat needs to be replaced? Thanks.

Yes, take it and smog it, if it has high numbers in the (dont quote me on this) the o2 reading, then that points towards a failed cat (better double check its the o2 though).

i troubleshot a 2003 toyota a few days ago with the same code. it's not just fords, there is no way the ECU can know weither the O2 sensor is failing, or the catalytic converter. think of it this way; the cat is a passive part, the only way the computer knows how well the cat is working, is by a reading from the o2 sensor behind it, if that o2 sensor has a reading which is out of the acceptable range, it could be for one of two reasons; either the o2 sensor failed, or the cat failed putting the o2 levels out of acceptable range, usually it's the cat.

Did you ever figure out your problem. I have the exact same thing going. Bank 2/Sensor 2 indicating stuck lean. It comes and goes. It's not there all the time.

Same problem as puum.
Mine was on Bank 1 / Sensor 2
The Service Engine Soon light would come and go for the past year or so.
I just received my scan tool today, replaced the down stream 02 sensor (after cat) on bank 1. Reset the CEL with the tool. I had to run a few errands today. Still no CEL.
