Oxygen sensor help

would anyone recommend replacing an oxygen sensor myself? I do quite a bit of work on my truck, but I don't know how sensitive they are and how difficult it is to get the necessary items to fix it.

Its easy to get it out of the exhaust its a little diffucult working with the plug in but if you have small hands it will be a sinch

Not to rain on you parade but mine was a b!tch to get out had to heat the hell out of it . Hes right about the plug, even with a body lift it was hard to get at. Good luck.

ya, earlier today..i changed my oil and decided, what the hell...lets change out those O2 sensors. ive had a check engine light on for one of them for the past couple months. and now im over 100,000 miles so i figured might as well replace both. i go pick them up and come back....could not get the driver side one to budge loose. i didnt even bother trying the passenger side yet as i couldnt even reach it. looks like im gonna have some fun tomorrow. even though i wanted to put my front coils in

An o2 sensor is one of the things I let a shop do. Not worth the trouble to do myself and very hard for the shop to screw up your truck.

02 sensors are easy todo unless it was my truck. The person who owned it before me must have had one of the 02 sensors replaced and who ever put the 02 sensor in cross threaded it. I cut off the wires and put a big wrench to wrench it out. I then tapped out the pipe and installed my new sensor.

what kinda price does a shop charge to replace 02 sensors?
how much are the 02 sensors in the first place?

my truck has 120,000 on it, i bought it at 90,000 ...probably about time for an 02 sensor change.

i believe one o2 sensor is like $60.... they arent hard to replace.... the hard part is the harness... you have to do some pulling and tricks with string...also.... some wd-40 20 minutes before is a great wonder as is the 7/8" o2 sensor socket

hmm, what would happen if i tried that? cutting the wiring so i could fit a socket over it for more force?

I first tried using one of the o2 socket wrenches with the slot down the side. That didnt work to well the socket actually started spreading apart so i decided to use the wrench and that was enough to get it out.

wow... the 02 socket i have is made for an impact wrench... i havent used it yet, but it seems pretty tough.... i got my original o2 off with a set of vicegrips and a hammer

I say it's easy. Spray it down with some liquid wrench, cut the wire (or the locking clip portion of the sensor, in case you can't get it off, you can still plug it back in and take it to the mechanic), and use the box end of your wrench. It may require some good pulling, but you'll get it eventually. Also, not sure about your model year (I’m sure it’s the same), but to hook-up the passenger side sensor, go through the wheel-well.

Shop prices for O2 sensors

I'm scheduling mine to get replaced sometime this week and did some calling to local (central Iowa) shops for prices. Here's what I found out.

o2 Sensor: $98, $114, $125, $90, $84
Labor: $40, $50, $40, $42, $41

The prices you found on the O2 Sensors are high. Try NAPA or Pep Boys, I recall paying around $75.

Also, Your have 3 O2 sensors. Unfortunately, because 2 are the same exact sensor, the part number is the same. So when a shop searches for them they will only pull up that part number and send you off with one less sensor than you need. Ford corrects this buy having 2 different part numbers for the two sensors, however, Ford charges different prices for the parts even though they are the same thing.

It was my understanding that 92's only had one O2 sensor. NoBoundaries, was you comment meant for me or for 91bluebeast?

Yeah, the 95+ have 3. It was just a problem that I ran into when I first replaced mine. Walked out with 2, then rolled under the truck to find 3.
