Well my 97 at 135K my O2 sensor on bank 2 seems to be failing. Pulled it out and it has this green powder coating on the sensor shield. Even Kermit sang "It's not easy being green." Had some slightly used sensors from my 92, Bosch 13187 that I thought about using by cutting off the plastic keying tabs on the side. The 92 year is now supposed to be 15715. Autozone listed the 15718 for the 97, but when I got there the computer said I could use the 15717. It was $10 cheaper and had no tabs.

Is this like the the one day use and one week use contact lenses that were the same and put in different boxes at different prices? I'll be cutting the tabs off my old ones and using them next. They ought to be good enough to just turn green!

Thanks Opera House... you just cleared up a long standing Q I have had (yeah imagine!). I have a brand new Bosch O2 sensor I boughts years ago for my 92. Yep, you got it, a 13187. Recently when I was looking on their website, I saw it had a new number, and always wondered if the counter guy got me the wrong one and I never installed it to find out. So, sounds like I'm safe <g>.

Me, I'd gladly accept the OLD 02 sensors that all to often get replaced needlessly. Then I could change weekly <wink>

Happy Exploring

Chris

I just got this code this morning, and hooked up the scanner. Iam now wondering what bank this HO2 sensor is? Is it the right side (passenger side) or the drivers side (left side)?

Thanks, Hoppy

well it could be the one just before the cat...

Which Ex did you get the code on, 92 or 97 ? (edit - DUH...the 92 won't throw that code... sorry). The P0153 is on the 2nd bank, driver's side.

Thanks, Hoppy

Almost positive its the left side. ;)

What was the code?

Bank #1 is on the side as plug #1

For the V6 that is the passenger side, bank #2 is the drivers side.

Just had to change spark plug #4 because of a coating in only 10K. That is the same bank, #2, where I replaced the slow O2 sensor. Not the first time either the plug has been replaced. I have a slow coolant leak which also probably poisoned the O2 sensor. Just have to see how long it lasts.

Ok, Now I am confused, Two guys say that it is the right side HO2 sensor and one guy says it is the Left side HO2 sensor.

Please anyone know which one it really is? I don't want to go under the truck more than once to replace the bad sensor. I know I should probably change all three of them for piece of mind, but I also don't know how much they are at this point. I haven't priced them out yet.

Thanks,

Hoppy

I havent sen anyone say it is not the drivers side

Autozone has a universal one for $50 that isn't keyed that I used.

Hoppy, P0153 indicates "upstream bank 2". Upstream means it's the one closer to the exhaust manifold. Bank 2 means it's on the driver's side. (Bank 1 is the side that has the number 1 cylinder, which is passenger side on the 4.0).

That one (upstream bank 2) is the hardest of them all to reach......:D

Beautiful.

That is what I needed to know. I am going to investigate pricing of new ones and maybe if I have time tonight, I will test it and see what I can come up with.

Once again,

Thanks a million,

Hoppy

O2 sensor CEL with stuck thermostat?

Since this seems to be the 1051 thread...

Can a thermostat sticking open cause a CEL with DTC 1051?

My thermostat stuck partially open about a week ago, and the CEL came on about 2 days later. I pulled the codes and got DTC 1051 - slow response HO2S-21. I cleared the code to see if it came back, and the CEL has stayed off for the last three days. The thermostat got replaced today. End of story, or should I be looking at my O2 sensors more closely? The truck has 113K, so I know they're likely to fail at any time.

Thanks.

You may have eliminated the problem, but sometimes O2 sensors go bad slowly. Don't be surprised if it comes back again. When mine went, I tested them all and the bad one was so close to giving a good signal I was quite surprised that it showed it was bad, but after replacing it I have yet to have another CEL.
