- 1997 Explorer 4.0L OHV
Hi,
I have a 1997 Explorer with a 4.0L OHV with an X VIN engine. I have had the upper exhaust manifold, plugs and wires replaced seven months ago. It is now running very rough all of the time and I keep getting a P0304 engine code. I also smell antifreeze when I run the car. Looking on the forum, it looks like I have a coolant leak however I am not seeing a lot of coolant loss in the coolant resevoir and I don't see any coolant on the engine. A common suggestion is to have the lower manifold gaskets replaced. I don't want to put the money for that into the vehicle considering its age, mileage and overall condition. Can I possibly get by with just replacing the #4 spark plug, especially if the plug is looking fouled? I figure that will buy me some time for little cost. Could tightening the upper and lower manifolds help? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am also getting a P0401 Insufficient EGR flow that I just simply bypassed. It looks like the EGR value is still good and I don't want to fix the DPFE at this point.
I understand that coolant leaking into the block could be caused by a cracked block with I understand to be a problem with these OHV engines. What kind of catastrophic failure could happen?
Thanks
