Hey All-

I am a proud new owner of a 1997 XLT 4.0L 46 Black Explorer. Shes a beauty :p. Anyway, I'm looking to add stricktly performance mods right now, and maybe a few exterior details later. The first two mods I was thinking about putting on were a K&N Air Filter and a flowmaster exaust. In the exaust I'm looking for one that will make the car sound a little tougher, but not much. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about models/types of air filters/exaust systems that would be relitively cheap and work well.

Thanks!

you want your 4.0 to sound a little tougher? a flowmaster twin exit will do the trick. it will also look tough since it will have a dual exhaust look. as far as air filters you may want to look at the kkm tru rev induction kit. i'm not sure if they offer something for the 4.0 (sohc/ohv) engines though. if not, a k&n air filter will also help a little over the stock air filter that came with your truck.

btw, you mentioned you have a 1997 XLT 4.0L 46 Black Explorer. what is the 46? was this a special option in '97?

hehe....sorry about that...the 46 was a mystype...
Thx for the info!

get a chip also, diablo or super

I agree on a free flowing intake and exhaust, and a computer chip. I have Flowmaster and a K&N, no chip yet.

I'd definitely go with the KKM system, but get an MAF with that too. I don't have one yet, but it's part of the plans. It's even more power

Since you live in Cali you may want the K&N since they have a C.A.R.B numer

what is a C.A.R.B number? And why would i want one?

It's The Califonia Air Resource Board, you need it to pass Emission testing, unless you just put the factory airbox back on before the test

so i wont pass unless i have the k&n? the true rev kit doesnt have this thing?

you would probably pass the test emissions wise, but they would fail you based on their visual inspection.:nono:

thx for the info......question for expo...is ur billet grill the the polished er brushed one? hard to tell from the pic.

What is an MAF?

An MAF is a mass air sensor. (I have no idea why it's an "F", but whatever.) What it does is it widens the tube in your intake system to allow more air in faster, which in turn helps your performance.

I'm not trying to be a a smartass but MAF sensor stands for Mass AirFlow sensor. I want to do that but my parents froze my assets for the time being. :fire:

mine is made by stull the polished one.

What'd you do to piss your parents off?
