After more than a year of trying to figure out why my X pings like crazy, I finally got it fixed! I have tried every single thing that I could find on this site, and others, without any improvement. My mechanic finally determined that it was a bad MAF, but heres the thing. It only malfunctioned while under load. It read normal sitting in the bay idleing and around town. He was able to hook up to it and actually watch it while driving. It always looked normal until really putting it under load. Then for some reason, the senor would go "lean" instead of "rich". It was actually doing just the opposite of what it should do when under heavy load. The first shop I took it to missed this, and told me the MAF was okay. I had cleaned the MAF twice(although it wasn't really dirty) but it didn't help at all. I had no error codes or anything to suggest the MAF could be bad. I tell you it runs like a new truck! I take back all the bad things I said about it!:)

good deal

I found the same problem with my IAC module on my 95 Ex. My scanner and a very good mechanic could not tell me diddly about what was causing my rough idle. They made several suggestions that HELPED, but didn't CURE the trouble.

I just decided scr*w it...I am tossing the IAC and replacing it with a new one. I don't care what the scanner and mechanic is telling me. Heck, its only 76 bucks...I've paid more for that and gotten no results...at least I could polish it back up and take it back if it proved to be a bust...right?

Well, two minutes of work and my 95's idle was purring right along.

Sometimes, its best to roll the dice and just trash old sensors. They're not really THAT expensive and most are easy to install.

I also remedied my excessive gas consumption on my 91 Ranger by tossing the 02 sensor, when the computer was telling me it was perfectly normal.

Sometimes it works out that way...glad it did for you too!

Check This out

Hey guys, good to hear about getting the problem fixed. You have really caught my attention however due to the fact that my x had been what I call ticking for over a year. Can you explain more of the noise about the "ping" so I can relate. Also, my only makes the noise when under a load of any kind. Thanks guys, hope to hear from ya soon. Seth
