I am rebuilding my 2001 Explorer Sport, 4.0L SOHC. So I am replacing everything so I can hopefully get another 100k out of it. So I purchased all new rings from ford and cleaned out the grooves(not the first time I have done this) but I am use to 5.0L engine. Anyways, I was wondering if the bottom rings(oil catcher), the center piece between the two thin rings. Does that center ring have to be overlapped or do they butt up to each other? Some ring sets overlap and some just butt up. I am new to this engine and don't want to mess anything up before firing it up with all new parts and wasting a bunch of money. Thanks for your help everyone!

I can pull this from the 2000 Ford service manual and post it tomorrow.

God Bless you taking on that SOHC, the short block is the easy part.

I'll copy and past that here tomorrow.

Peace Out;
Bob

I found out what it was, bad oil scraper ring. Miked it out and it was a bad set from Ford. The notches on the center ring were larger then the old rings, causing the thin outer rings to stick out .030 of an inch. So i just used an old one for that cylinder. Thanks for your help and I hope you didn't spend to much time looking that up.
