Please Help My EX Died Today!!!

Well my O/D light has been flashing for a while so i took it to autozone to read the codes nothing came up, I decided it would be a good idea to check the fluid and saw it was a dark gray color. The fluid did not smell burnt so i put in a new tranmission oil filter and oil.

i noticed my Rpms were up around 3000 on the highway at 70mph which seemed a little higher than usual and today the clutch started slipping and the rpms went up to 4500. i got off the highway and checked my fluid level and everything was okay, until the transmission totally went and would no longer move in any gear and started to make a wining noise like something was slipping.

It will still go through all the gears and if i step on the gas alot it will nuge forward a bit once i hit around 4000 rpm, and in reverse as well.

Any Clues on what my problem is?


its a 1999 Explorer XLT 4.0 Sohc 4x4

I am guessing its an automatic? if so might be the torque converter

yes it is an auto im considering buying a used tranny with 48,000 on it for 650$ and put it in myself.. how hard of a job is that?
