OK i have had my 2006 explorer since 2007 with 30,x.. on it and it now has 130,x.. on it. i work in alaska and when i came home this year my lil sister had used it and blew the fourth radiator in it and so i went threw and did a complete tune up. I.E. radiator, waterpump, spark plugs Ap103, wires, fuel filter, engine oil, trans, transfer and front and rear diff oil.

well when i did the wire i put the wire on the left bank i effed those up and was in a hurry. so when i fired it up i t barley ran. i gave it a lil gas to see if it wasnt just getting spark. then i shut it off. went and looked up the firing order and fixed the left bank wires. it runs and idels fine now. but im getting 4mpg drop. and when i am driving or in park, and the RPM's are at 2400 and above i hear a weired noise. i cant figure out what it is..

Ive researched the timing chain and every one says they have noise at idel. i do not. i hope by forcing it to misfire like i did, i didnt damage any valves or what not.

Please help.

sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. you could look in the area you hear the noise and spray with a water bottle and if it bogs down that is where the leak is.

also, did you gap the plugs correctly?

Yes i gaped the plugs to spec and i also did a vacume leak check with no results.

REVERSING THE 5 AND 6 WIRE IS A COMMON MISTAKE AND SELDOM CAUSES A PROBLEM. YOU DIDN'T MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT THE MIL COMING ON, SO I GUESS IT DIDN'T. TRY SCANNING IT WITH A SCANNER THAT REPORTS PENDING CODES.

When you view codes, the Tool displays both Diagnostic Trouble codes and Pending Codes. Diagnostic Trouble Codes are reported when a component, sensor, or other part of the vehicle is indicating a malfunction is present. The malfunction must be present for a sufficient amount of time before the Tool will display a Diagnostic Trouble Code. Pending Codes are only reported if a problem occurs during the current or last completed drive cycle. Pending Codes do not necessarily indicate a faulty component or system. Pending Codes convert to Diagnostic Trouble Codes when an emissions problem persists long enough to be considered a real problem, not an anomaly.

Damn Jake, I hope you don't steer Rubasu wrong, or he might be leaving fourm for good! :D

What scan tool would you recommend for a shade tree mechanic? I've got a rudimentary unit now, but I can see the need for a much better one.

Edit: I'm getting closer to figuring out what scan tool to upgrade to. Looks like a PC based unit is the way to go, except my "PC" laptop is a Mac! :(

On with the hunt...

I checked for codes and have none. No active or pending and none stored. Thanks for the advise. I still have that random noise and can't pin point it still. I'm going to take a video and post a link for you guys this week.
