I checked the fuses and the power mirror fuses are good on my 98 mountaineer.

I highly doubt that both of the power mirrors went bad so I'm thinking there must be some sort of power mirror control module or relay somewhere that should be checked??

anyone know what else controls these things??

yeah, I used a test light and get power across the wires when it's pushed in the proper direction. I even tossed on a spare I had.

Unless things changed alot from my 96 diagram, the circuit is pretty "simple"... only has a fuse, two mirror motors and the switch/control.... no relay. Since you checked for power and it was there, that rules out the fuse and switch. The culprit...you guessed it, ground. Check to see that you have ground at the switch.... it is also "sent" from the switch to each mirror.

Since you have power at the switch, the next step is to remove the door panel and the speaker and check the power at the connector.

Good luck .........

Same problem

I am having the same problem with my '96 Eddie Bauer. I first noticed this problem when I was driving, and it didn't work at first, but after a short while, the mirrors moved. I cheched the fuse, it was fine. I even took the door panel apart and attempted to diagnose the problem. I really need them to work because my other family members drive my car, and they are always moving the seats and the mirrors. Moving the mirrors by hand is stupid because it will eventually damage the motors in the mirrors themselves.

If anyone has any input on this, I would really appreciate it.

my 97 switch intermittenly failed to work in one direction, i removed the switch disasembled it and sprayed contact cleaner inside and on the connector pins. Popped the switch back together and reconnected it. Been working fine since then.

Hey thanks, I'll try that next time. Maybe there was some moisture damage or something.

Thanks again.

I had the same thing happen to my passenger side electric seat. It would only move forward. When I took the switch apart I was able to slide a business card between the contacts a few times to clear the deposits and it works great.

My mirror switch was only moving the mirrors up and left but not down or right and it was doing the same thing for both mirrors. I swapped out the mirror switch with one I bought on eBay and I still have the same problem. I'm not sure what else to do, unless both mirror motors are fried and will not move right or down... but that's pushing it.
