Top of the Morning to everyone, The Clodhopper here has a sick 03 Limited,.

This last Monday the wife was going to town she got into the driver's seat pressed the memory #2 switch button on the left front door and nothing happened. She turned the key on did it again and nothing happened. So the next thing out of her mouth was "HONEY".

Everything worked fine the day before no problems or symptoms. Well I spent all day yesterday trying to diagnose the problem. What is not working is the memory switch, the driver's seat up/down/forward/back/lean forward/back, the adjustable pedals, and the heated seats. Now the passenger seat works fine except for the heated seat.

So I spent the afternoon on the www and checking things that were suggested from the fuses/relays under the hood, fuses inside the the cab under the left side dash especally the #1 30a. I checked for broken of chaffed wires in the rubber boot on the left front door, I even took the LF door panel off and checked the wiring. Everything was in good shape. I did find that there was no power to the memory switch. I pulled the LF door rocker panel and checked the wiring there. I found the wires going to the seat and I in fact have power in the wire. I took the grey connector apart and found that the wire (could'nt ID the color of the wire because of it's location, the seat is al the way back hard to get under the rear of the seat) but the wire is in the top left corner of the as you are looking at the inside of the connector, It has power but none of the other wires do.

The only other thing I haven't done is take the seat out and check the wiring and connections under the seat. As I said the seat is al the way back and the rear seat bolts are covered up by the seat tracks.

Well guy's what do I do next? All the fuses that protect those affected items are good and have power to their circut's. Any suggestions, "HELP".

Thanks, Steve.

Clodhopper, I have the shop manuals & wiring diagrams for the '02. I will check them when I get home tonight. I can scan and send any pertinent info.

Hopefully someone else will respond in the meantime.

thanks for the reply. I found another post from fordsRfun posted 03-08 with relatively the same problem I have. It looked like the culperit may be the memory module is causing the problem . It's located under the seat b/t the frame and cushion. What I need to figure out how to get the seat out out of the truck.

Thanks, Steve, The Clodhopper.

Seat should come out with 4 bolts. There are wire connections that need to be disconnected to physically remove the seat.

I don't have memory seats, so I'm going by what I have.

Thanks Rondo, the problem is the seat is all the way back and the the rear bolts are covered by the seat tracks. Not able to get wrenches or sockets onto the bolts. What I need to figure out is how to move the seat forward. Also I'm thinking about by passing the memory circuit. Have any thoughts? thanks the clodhopper.

Maybe some temporary power directly to the seat to get it to move?

Joe Dirt had a tip for doing this at the junkyard: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285810

Didn't get a change to check shop manuals/diagrams last night. Will try to get to it tonight.

Good Morning Everybody,

Nice and chilly this morning in Montrose, CO., *23 Burrrrrrrrr. Well I worked on on the seat all day yesterday. This is what I did to get the seat out of the truck. On the back underside of the seat where the rear seat bolts are there are two threaded screw rods that move the seat forward/back. On the end of those rods there is a welded washer. I took a pair of slip joint pliers to the washer and manually turned the left screw rod to the right and slowly moved the seat forward to a point it allowed me to put a socket and rachet onto the bolts and remove them. Crude, but it worked. The seat was reoved from the truck.

I then completely took the seat apart. I disconnected every electrical connection and put them back together. I cleaned and lubed all the joints. I took the switch apart cleaned and lubed it and put it back together. I ran continuity checks on all the wiring, looking for a broken wire. I took the motorola black box apart looking for a fuse. NOne found, just a circuit board.

I put everything back together and found nothing wrong. No bad connections, broken /chaffed/ shorted wires, the circuit board looked in good shape. I checked for voltage at the seat electrical connections in the truck and found 12.6 volts in the green connection on 3 wires and 2 wires in the grey connection. This voltage is the same as the battery voltage. Before I put the seat back in, I disconnected the battery and I pulled the inside fuse box out of it's hole and repaced the #3 delayed accessory relay and put everything back together. I put the seat back into the truck and hooked everything up, the seat did not work. No heated seat, no movement with or without the ignition key on.

So I went back to the junction box next to the battery and checked the fuseable links. I found they were good. I clipped the zip ties and unraveled those wires, then went and cheked for seat functions. No movement, but now I have heated seats for both drivers/passenger seats.

I called it a day, so thats where I'm at with this. I'm concluding now that may be the the issue is in the motorola black box.

Well guy's let me know what you think, have a wonderful day, thanks again for your help, Steve the Clodhopper.

Hello Everybody,
Sorry I haven't got back to you before now, have been working on the motorhome. Wa nt to let you guy's know I found the the problem with my seat. It was a broken ground wire in side the boot between door and pillar on the driver's side door.

I wish to thank Big Rondo for the troubleshooting information he sent and his experiences with the wires in the boot.

With so many issues with the wiring at that location you would think Ford would of had a recall, yeah right don't hold your breath.

Thanks Again for all your help, Steve the Clodhopper.

You're welcome.

Thanks for the update. Glad you got it sorted. :biggthump

I know this was a while ago, but where exactly is this ground to be found as I'm having probs with an 00 Ex. Although I'm getting all the power inputs required to the seat and power to the memory switch Cheers
