The other day I decided to switch over to 4WD while driving it a field. I was surprised about the result. There was a humming noise coming from underneath. I couldn't go more than about 15 MPH, even when flooring it. Also, there was a "popping" noise when I attemped to turn, which did not sound very good. Can anyone tell me what's wrong, and how much it will cost to fix. I think it's the differential, but I could be wrong.

Man sounds like low range to me! Mine does pretty much exactly that when in low range.

Is it a problem, or is it supposed to be like that? Doesn't seem normal at all.

Well my transmission whines.....but I assume that's normal. And the popping noises are normal too because it's going through driveline windup because the wheels can't slip enough. But this should ONLY happen in low-range. Neither of these things should happen in 4-auto.

thats really sounds like your hub.. open a window... and stick your head out for a minute, while driving, do you hear a clicking sound? when you press your 4wd button, does it stop? Going around turns theres a loud kind of popping, snapping sound that sounds like you just broke something really important right?

My hub does the same thing and Im just about to replace it. Your hubs are beginning to go, www.fordpartsnetwork.com has a pretty decent pricec on them (much better than the $350 for the part alone that ford quoted me)... and its an easy install according to all the members here, and the haynes manual I bought

He doesn't have the same 4x4 setup as you do. The 95+ Explorer has a sealed, permanently locked hub assembly.

Mine hums in 4-lo, has since I got it. If you were in 4-lo, then the speed and noise are normal.

noises sounds like normal 4Lo 1st gear to me & 15MPH. But i cant hear to much noise accept the loud flowmaster. poping will be heard when turning if the driveline binds up or whatever. usually happens when in 4HI or LO on pavement where there is no slip.

as everyone else said you must have been in 4LOW, if you weren;t then i'd get it checked out
