I have a 1997 explorer 4 door 2wd, trans went out on it, so i been looking for a trans, finally found one, from a 1999 explorer 2wd. Looked around to make sure it would work, and it fit, and works excellent, but......i have no speedo. The tail shaft is where my speed sensor was before but this one doesnt have that where, can anyone help me? Im desprate! Lol thanks all!!!

The later models had the sensor as part of either the front or rear ABS tone ring from what I remember. I guess you have to look into that route to install a more or less "custom" sensor. As long at the computer can get the signal, I guess how you get it don't matter. I think some one on here mounted a custom tone ring and sensor onto the rotor on a custom drive shaft mounted e-brake. Good luck...

Indeed, if you have a 97, unfortunately, the only trans that will drop in and be a direct plug-n-play will be another '97. For the 98 model year, they dropped the output shaft speed sensor on the 4x4 and the VSS on the 2wd transmission in favor of utilizing the ABS sensors to interpret the vehicle speed and feed that info to the PCM/GEM etc. via the ABS control module.

I'm not aware of anyone having sucessfully transplanted a 98-01 trans in a 97 model truck. I vaguely recall the thread john mentioned, but it was an external completely custom unit that they added.... It wasn't a lot of fun either IIRC.
