putting when pressing on the gas

i got in my X and a real bad putting sound came from the engin what could this be on happens when i press on the gas

It gear, in park, speed, rpm?

Is it just a sound, or all around rough running? Do the rpms dip? Running rich at all? Sudden onset?

Basically you need to give us lots more info here.
