My Trans does not go into 4th gear. I will be getting a trans from the Pull and Pay. Was wondering if it mattered what year I need to stay with when getting another Auto or does any 2nd gen Trans work in my 96?

Thanks for letting me know. :)

EDIT :-) It is an Automatic.

First, 6 cylinders, It doesn't matter as long as you are 96-up, the earlier A4LD will bolt in but is not controlled by the ECM .If you get one from a later Ex especially with a SOHC, you need the mid plate and starter as the position of the starter pocket is lower on the bellhousing and the design of the starter cone is different. The ECM in the 96 will not overdrive 1st, so you will only have 4 speeds as you are supposed to now. I have a 1998 5R55 in my 96 4.0 OHV and it has been happy for about 100K now. I think there is a thread here somewhere about this swap. You can change the EPC if you wish, mine shifts firm which I am happy with. You will also need to use the MLP from the 96. V8s- there were some valve body harness changes through the years, I want to say 96&97 are the same, as are 98& up. If you swap years, you can swap harnesses and they work fine, also swap MLP sensors.
Are you sure you need a trans? it may be repairable

WOW I missed another part in my beginning. LOL. Also a 4.0 sohc. :-) I am not sure if I need to replace trans or what I need to do. The OD light blinks and it will not shift into over drive. It shifts fine from 1st to 3rd but that is all. I also have no Speedo. But not a big deal right now for Speedo. Not sure what to do if it will not shift into over drive. Not sure what to look for or what I would need to replace to get it working properly. Also the engine light is on if that makes a difference. I have not been able to hook up a computer to it to see what the code would be for the lights.

If its a 96 I don't think you have a SOHC, you will have a OHV 4.0. The O/D light blinking and the CEL will lead you to what is wrong. I wouldn't immediately replace the trans, you may put one in and have the exact same condition. Have the codes read and report back. You may not even have a trans problem, but something else causing the trans to react in the way you are describing. As far as the speedometer is concerned, there is a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the back of the transfer case output on the driver side, you need to check its resistance and also the gear on the end for damage

Thank you sir. I will look into getting the codes and report back as soon as I can. :-)

OK the code was speed sensor A, 0500 code was the code. So is it just the speed sensor on the back of my transfer?

Yeah it could be, the computer needs it to know when to shift. I keep extras lol

Thank you sir. Gonna get one this weekend.
