when you have the auto hubs and are in 4wd , is it normal to hear an occasional clicking sound from the hubs when your backing up a short distance and then going fwd again (like when you change your mind about going around something and back up to go through it instead ) ?? the sounds come from one side sometimes, and then it sounds like its from both sides at other times , but doesnt do it all the time,,, is this a common occurance?? or do you think the hubs are trying to disengage ?

Yes, that is normal. That is actually an indication they are working. What your hearing is the hubs disengaging and then reengaging. That is a why most switch to the manual hubs as they are always engaged.

If you change direction in 4WD, the hubs will unlock and relock in the other direction. This clicking is normal to hear. It becomes quite apparent when you're rocking the vehicle when stuck.

That's why rocking when stuck with autohubs is a bad idea, when the hubs try to lock under a high torque load is when they break.
