I recently purchased my 97 Explorer sport with 149,200 miles on it....it has the SOHC V6 engine.

It runs very well and the entire truck is in really nice shape, especially for the age and mileage...obviously it iwas pretty well taken care of.

Anyway, I was wondering how long this vehicles are able to go??? How many miles do you have on your SOHC or any explorer for that matter...I would think other owners would be interested too...thanks:roll:

I have about 190,x.. miles on my V6 SOHC and I have never had any problems with it. Just routine maintenance and tune-ups every once in a while.

That's very encouraging...thanks

My 97 same V6 SOHC engine had 167,300 when I bought it recently. It is at 169,000 now and hasn't shown any signs of problems. Not knowing the past maintenance history I did the oil change right away.

I'm at 178,100 and climbing on mine....regular maintenance is where it's at!! :-)

just bought a 97 xlt with 225K on it and it runs great.

97 sport 205,000 miles, running daily driver but idles low in park

99 limited 203,000 miles, super strong engine

151,000 miles

I have 151,000 miles on my Sport that I suspect was not properly maintained before I purchased it this May. It has been revved to 6,000 rpm multiple times on the dynamometer under full load. It has a very slight rear main seal leak and an intermittent slight chain rattle. I have not detected any shift problems in the 5R55E. I expect to rebuild both the engine and transmission in the next 2 years.

Woweee - the responses in this thread have helped to settle little nags in my head! lol Just 2-3 months ago, I got my first X, a '96 4.0 XLT, with 167,000 miles on it. I was nervous as could be, not knowing what to expect from it with the high mileage. Being retired and disabled, my "normal" driving in my vehicle is at tops, 2,000 miles in a YEAR (use wife's car for trips, etc). The paint on the hood is not in the best shape, afraid that's going to require a pro paint job, and I just had to replace the alternator. No signs of rust anywhere and the interior is like brand new. I love my X!! Am hoping with the low miles I put on it, it will last a long time.

Ive owned my 97 SOHC V6 XLT since 1999. I bought it with 30,000 on it. Always used Mobil 1 oil changes and tranny flushes every 30k. The front guides and tensioners were revised/changed out at the dealership at 50k. Now have 199,000 miles with no problems.

Did recently have the thermostat housing changed and last year replaced the EPC shift solenoid which was changed to resolve the 2-3 shift flare. All else is good.

I have 230,000 miles on my 96 XLT with no engine troubles. The tranny is starting to slip at the 2-3 shift but still goes down the road.

does anybody know what would cause this slip ? is it an easy fix ?

Lucas makes a transmission fix lube that is about $10 at Walmart and other auto parts stores.....

I have talked to several people who say it works to stop slipping and seals leaks....one guy uses it in newer cars as a preventative maintenance item and swears he got 200,000+ out of every tranny his company owns...I dunno, but it may be worth a try.....let us know if it helps....

97 Ex 4.0L SOHC about to turn 200k and motor is still strong. think i might be replacing the tranny in the next 6 months or so though.

looks like i'll be trying that to see myself. thanks:salute:

Looks like my trans is done for at 235,000. I am getting a grinding noise that corosponds to the RPMs when I put it in gear, ( but then goes away when you take off ) It still goes and shifts ok but I don't want to chance on getting stranded. I have no clue what it is....

I never put any additive in it, but I did use Vavoline Max life since the first filter change at 90k.

Engines still going strong at 252,000 but my second trans just went.

73,000 on my 98, timing chain makes a little noise if you get on it before it's all warmed up. Other then that, it's a great motor. I'll probably update the front guides and tensioners after this winter.

155,x.. on my 93 4.0 OHV orig trans/engine
152,x.. on my 98 5.0 OHV orig trans/engine
85,x.. on my 03 4.6 SOHC orig trans/engine

My friend has 110K on his 97 SOHC and all he's had to replace was the timing chain once.

309,500 on my '93 OHV - original engine and auto trans
62,000 on my '06 SOHC - original engine and auto trans

Obviously, the '06 is running strong. The '93 runs good, doesn't make as much power as it used to, and oozes a little oil out the back (rear main, I'd guess).
