2000 Explorer
Hey Guys,

About 2 years ago the Display on my 2000 Ford Explorer went out. Everything sitll works fine with it except the display. Rather than try and fix it im going to get a new system for it.

Here is my question..

Do you guys have any sites you know of where i can see the types of Systems that are compatable with my 2000 Ford Explorer?

Im looking for some type of CD console with maybe a 6 disc changer? I hate the big bulky one thats in there right now cause i have no need for the tape deck.

I listen to CDs and My Ipod so a Line IN for my Ipod would be nice also.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what i could get for my Ford?

I dont need any new speakers or anything just the CD system.

Thansk for your time!

from personal experience, STAY AWAY FROM SONY!!! they do just what they are called, xplod! most manufacturers make some sort of connections for an ipod these days, and i have had both alpine and pioneer head units with ipod connections in my truck.(the sony i had was years ago, before ipods). both companies worked well for me, but the alpine is a little more user friendly and has a few more options.(searching folders, etc.) what is your price range? alpine has them from about $150-about $2000. i have the iva-w205 and it was a great investment. i also have a cda-9885 that is sitting under my bed that was in my truck for 3 weeks before i got the w205 if it interests you. anyway, here is a link to all of the current alpine head units. let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the replies!

Im not exactly sure what i need so thats why im here. I assume by single and double its going to determine the height of the player. I wouldnt mind a single but then what would i do with the extra space?

The brand isnt that important to me although id like somthing thats going to last. I dont want this job to be a huge project, no fiberglass mods etc.

@DMacLennan14- You talked about a link at the end but i didnt see on there.

Thanks again for your help, im not that familer with all these terms for the audio equipment so im sorry if it becomes frustrating.

Din v Double Din

Factory stereo is double din, the Sony is single din. They install a kit that basically leaves the space below the stereo open like an extra storage area. It's very professional. You can leave a couple cds in there or a cell phone...

Sony has a very good reputation for quality.

Any specifics?

I've had a Kenwood for the last 4 years, and this is my first Sony. What are the issues with Sony?

Oh, and the cost of Alpine - are they fair? Thanks!

You definitely need to check out http://www.crutchfield.com Decent prices, and all the best brands. They will also give you everything you need to make the system work in your explorer. Had nothing but good experiences with them.

Sony, at one time, made some of the finest car audio on the market. Then, they decided to go for mass market and brought the XPLod line. It is cheaply made, and not very reliable. They also tend to have some gimmiky features and are quite ugly compared to some (though I think nearly ALL current heads are hideous). That said, I have one of the first Xplod series released, and it still works fine in its 4th vehicle (handed down to my mother after I sold the truck it was in). Also, the newest Xplod's are getting good reviews, and I really like the MEX R1 I played with. Maybe they decided to go back to their roots?

If i were to go with a single din, could the spare room be used for a cd changer such as a 6 disc or w/e ?

Im not sure what the space is like or if one would even work in the ford.

I looked at crutchfield the other night and i like the fact that you can choose the model and what not of your car but when i did they came up with one radio and it said not compatable.

Home » Car Audio & Video » Changers & Tuners » In-dash CD Players » 4 Door 2000 Ford Explorer with Factory MACH system i think it is.

I guess im just not sure of the sizes and what not that would fit in my car.

Usually the extra space is just enough to put a wallet or smaller items in... it's not likely you'll get a cd changer in there. Go through the Audio Forum and you can probably see a few pictures... I'm sticking with my Sony w/iPod w/remote. There are no modifications made or changes to the audio area in the dash, it's just a stereo swap. You might need a kit and/or harness... that usually comes with buying a new stereo.

I dont mind getting the sony product even though a few people dont suggest it. The fact that i cant get a cd changer in there doesnt bother me that much either cause i have an ipod with all of my music on it.

If i did purchase this one you suggested does it come with the "Kit" that i will need? Since the stock is a double Din i will need the section that will cover up where the lower part is since the sony is a Single Din. Just wondering if i have to find that seperatly for my ford or what.

Got any links to a product that will convert the Double din section into a single allowing me to put in that sony?

Thanks for all your help guys!

@donner, Do you happen to have a pic around on your computer from yours that i can see? If not its fine, just wanting to see how it would look with the product i will be buying.

If you want a 6 disc, and you want to ditch the retro tape deck, and want it to look clean, with many features, go with a Double Din. I havn't checked the market recently as I am completely content with my system, so I can't tell you if they have a DD with 6-disc. But Alpine I believe has a double din touch panel. I played with it a few months ago, nice stuff.

But whatever you do, I will concur with the others. Don't buy sony, their quality sucks, and their styling is hideous. Go with Pioneer or Alpine.

Don't forget, eBay is your best friend. I got my deck that's retail everywhere for over 500 for 187 =)

Anyways, good luck =)

PS - Pioneer has iPod adapters that will allow you to control the iPod through the deck, no more grabbin in the dark for the iPod and staring at the iPod while you are tryin to drive haha. I believe alpine has it too. Whatever works haha. I like my Pioneer.

Anyways, good luck again haha.

Well, the kit you would buy apart from the stereo, harness is also separate. The Double din will take up the entire space you have now, and the single din will leave an area open that looks like a compartment - the kit will do this.

As far as quality, I've only had mine a few months, no problems, the iPod controls are on the stereo and the remote. If the stereos are that ugly as is posted, then you take the advice of the the others and stick with what they have. I'm not so in to audio that these things matter... I have the stereo that does what I need it to do...

I can't get a pic at this moment (normally I would) but I'll see if I can find a link for you... but at this time, I would say if everyone says go with other than Sony, they must know something... maybe the others can post pics of their h/u so you can compare... thanks!

Do you have any suggestions or links to where i can get a kit / harness to be able to use a Single Din? Its gonna be going in my Ford and its a black dash so it will have to be the same color obviously.

It's all available where you buy, as Aldive has pointed out. You should not have to make any changes to your vehicle... Buy according to your taste, some stereos have more lights than a Christmas tree, but all they do is play music just like the rest... If you want a stereo to wake up the city, then Alpine, if you want a stereo for any other reason, most brands are equally good, and can wake up the city too - it's just a stereo.
