I am looking at a Pre-Owned Explorer and have a couple questions about the power options, mainly the power fold rear seats and power rear hatch. I usually stay away from bells and whistles and prefer manual seats but wife has found an Ex she likes that has power fold rear seats and lower rear hatch. Can you operate these manually if you wish or if the electrics go out?
Anyone had any problems with either of these options?
We keep a car for a long time and just want something durable.
Thanks
Jed

Hi Jed. I don't know if the you can open the hatch from the outside if there was no power to the release button. I think you could likely close it if the latch doesn't require power to lock it. I've never had occasion to try either. The hatch has worked flawlessly for me. I did have some problems with the folding seats but was able to rectify that myself. On one occasion when I attempted to fold both, one would work but the other went down and came partially back up. It did this a few times. I then folded and unfolded them individually a few times and the everything seemed to clear up.
I'm not sure if it was because I don't use them or not. They are always in the stowed (folded) position and I always have the Husky cargo mat on top of them.

If the motor fails, you can still open and close it manually as long as the button works to pop it open. If for some reason the button fails, I dont think you can get it open. I have had no issues in 48,000 miles with either of the items you questioned.
