Running my truck not in 4x4, at about 1-8mph I hear the front sounds kind on winey noise. I stop the noise goes away. I speed up past 10mph it's gone. What can cause my truck to be kind of winey like that? Should I lube to hubs or drain/refill x-fer case / transmission?

My 4x4 engages fine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does it sound like you have large offroad tires that are whirring down the road? Adding grease / lube to the hubs will most likely cause more problems since they are ment to have virtually none in them.

If it does sound like a whirring, your bearings are most likely are going out.

It would help if you let us know what year Explorer you have, as this could eliminate somethings that the later models don't have as opposed to the older models.

Brans, it does not sound like big mudder crusing down the road. More like gear wineing.

-Ray, it is a 02 Sport trac 4x4

Does it happen all the time, or just if it is cold out? If when cold, could be issue with Dust Boot Cover and/or Hub Seals

Tplynch,

No it happens all the time, but only at slow mph speeds. After 10mph, goes away.

I asked some people on myst.com and they said its normal, but its a little loud. If I was going down a narrow alley at that low speeds you can hear it whine really good b/c of the echo.

It has 83K miles on it. Do you think changing the tranny fluid would help?

the sound you hear is from the gears in your transmission contacting each other and it is extemely NORMAL...changing the fluid will not quiet that sound as tranny fluid does not loose its viscosity it is a constant and never wears out...check out the thread on xsfer case fluid of recent replies

If you haven't ever done it, replace the tranny fluid and the t/fcase fluid. At a minimum, I would check the t/fcase and tranny fluid levels. Make sure they are full.

How can I check the t/f case fluid level??

There is a plug on the TOP of the case (don't confuse with the drain plug on lower part of it). You take the plug out, and stick your finger in. You should feel fluid. Case should be filled with fluid to the plug level.

I agree with nascar-intimid, that this is the noise that you are hearing.
