I'm working on my 1997 F-150, NOT my Explorer.

I just picked this thing up for $400.00. (No need to list what was wrong with it when I got it,..... just what's wrong NOW ).

I was blaming my G.E.M. for my lack of 4WD, so I got a transplant from a cadaver vehicle. ($10.00, couldn't beat it). But the donor vehicle was a 1999, mine is a 1997. (You already knew that).

Well,..... the transplant was obviously not compatible with my system. The windshield wipers wouldn't shut off, I lost my turn signals, the dash showed me the "Low Range" light, but I'm not certain that the transfer case actually shifted, there were other symptoms that I don't remember..... the truck was freaking out. So I put the old G.E.M back in. NOW, my wipers work again, and the "Low Range" light is off..... but I completely lost my whole instrument cluster, my turn signals, the heater/ac blower fan, and my 4wd still won't shift. (On-the-fly switch on the dash). And the best part is, when I turn the key off, the engine stays running.....

..... UNTIL I OPEN THE DOOR!!!

(THEN the engine shuts off). :splat:

.....Can anyone confirm that I shorted out the G.E.M,..... or could the problem be the PCM?

Or have the Rabid Zombie Ghost Squirrels come back to finish me off???!!!

.....(Sorry,..... I'll go take my meds, I know I'm a little late). :(

I have never heard of something like this happening. The only thing I can say is you have to match that GEM part number exactly. If it's not you can get all sorts of bad things going on. Was the truck ever in a flood? sounds like you have some nasty gremlins.

I parted out a 97 XLT, I don't know if I have them GEM for it though. PM me the part number off your box and I'll see if I have it. It was a 97 5.4 with the E4OD off road and tow package.

No need for PM,..... Gem # F75B-14B205-ND.

..... PCM# F75F-12A650-AJC.

I just hope I don't have to replace BOTH.

It figures,...... the only thing wrong with this thing was the 4WD didn't work. THEN I started working on it.

Now it's spanking me. :splat:

DAMNIT!!!

I got my turn signals and my instrument cluster back.

.....(No, that's not what I'm *****in' about).

Those two huge wire-harness connectors that attach to the back of the fuse panel? The ones that are held in with two 10mm bolts?

.... Yeah,..... After swapping my GEMs back and forth, I neglected to tighten the bolts up, so I wasn't getting a complete connection from the fusebox to my wiring harness.

Well,...... I still have no 4WD, and I still have to open the door to shut the engine off.

So, I'm still looking for a GEM module.
