Sound Interesting? I have a 91 Explorer Sport, 2dr/2wd. 145,000 miles. 5spd. No leaks (external or internal) that I am aware of, however my coolant disappears at times, but not in the oil. Plugs, wires, all are fairly new. Horsepower seems all there. About 6 months ago I noticed a "ticking" sound at startup that matched the idle speed. This would go away when the engine warmed up. This gradually worsened and now the sound is there almost all the time, it will disappear at times, but only briefly. The rapid fire sound is at highway speed, and I describe it as such because it sounds as if someone fires a machine gun for 3 seconds, stops 3 seconds, fires 3 seconds, etc... It is not a loud noise, but very noticeable. I used a garden hose as a stethoscope, listened to all the plugs, injectors, etc. When I hear the firing of the plugs, or injectors, at times the ticking doesn't match the rythm. The loudest area I could hear the sound is from under the exhaust heat shield on the passenger side at the manifold. The sound appears to come from the rear of the engine, on top, near the back left plug, but it can only be pinpointed using the hose at the heat shield. Could it be worn lifters, pushrods, valves, or a blown manifold gasket? Why intermittent? Nothing has worked as far as high-vis additives, etc.
please respond, other than this this truck has been mechanically phenomenal. (don't ask about rubber tranny plugs on the manual trans! or the A/C though!) ARRRRGH!

Well not paying attention to where you say the noise is coming from... it may be your lifters. It's very common with the Explorers and they go even quicker if you don't take care of your oil. I had mine changed at 104k, but at the same time, put in a high flow oil pump and new gaskets and had the oil pan cleaned out.
Your best bet is to get them from vanir technologies: $168.00 a set I believe. Don't bother with Ford they will charge you 320 - 450 for the set. Get it checked out at a mechanic first.
