I'm a newbie at some of this stuff but I'm learning. I am on a mission to improve my idle. I've read Aldive's saga on this topic and have tried most of the obvious and inexpensive fixes first. I'm currently trying to rule out a vacuum leak. This morning I hooked up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold to see if a leak might be causing my rough idle. I’m reading 19” Hg at idle, but I’m not sure how to interpret the needle movement. It flutters rapidly in a 1” range. I have no experience with vacuum, so I’m not sure how “steady” the needle is supposed to be. Should it be rock steady, or have some variation? You almost can’t see the needle, it oscillates so rapidly it’s like a blur.
I know the obvious thing to do would be to hook it up to an engine that idles smoothly. And I do plan to do that just as soon as I can.
