I have a 94 explorer and when i hit the gas hard accelerating onto the interstate or going up hills i hear a rattle coming from the engine area and it seems to be getting more noticable that it was in the past. Is there any ideas of what this could be?

i have the same thing in my 94 explorer i believe it is the engine pinging i have yet found a way to fix it and have almost given up on trying to do so but if i was you i would look up some posts that contain engine pinging and see what they have to say.
good luck

by the way my friend had the same motto on the back of his blazer (drive like you stole it ) and some one did that exact thing as he walked out of windixie some one drove it off

I also have this in my 94 X I dont know whats causing the pinging if thats what it is. I've run 93 octane, I've sea foamed, tune up, and nothing has helped.

Pinging is just that a pinging sound. It's not a rattle sound. I also have a rattle sound & haven't figured out what it is. It's not pinging.

Metallic2001, Under load like that is often pinging or spark knock. Fairly common to these engines. Two common causes:
1) Carbon buildup in the cylinders. Clean them out with Seafoam or equivalent.
2) Engine running lean. Several causes for this:
a) Dirty MAF.
b) Vacuum leak.
c) An interesting vacuum leak is through the lower intake manifold gasket as the bolts get loose. Can usually be fixed by tightening the bolts down. Occasionally, the gasket needs to be replaced.

Those items seem to cure most ~90% of people's issues with pinging.

exactly how do u clean the MAF and clean with sea foam??

go to an auto parts store and buy the can of seafoam. It is fed through a vacuum line. Instructions are on the can.
www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html has lots of information. Look under engine pinging for instructions on how to clean the MAF.

jason94sport excessive pinging can be mistaken for a rattling noise i believe that is what he is talking about and that is what i have and what you proably have

Don't think so. I've heard pining engines before, & the noise that comes from my x is not the same sound. Also the noise I have happens in P, or N just reving. Not just under load. As I said in another thread I'm not really concerned with it. If something breaks guess I'll find it then. I'm not killing myself trying to fix it since it's not my daily driver.

My 94 pings too...I haven't tried seafoam yet (kinda afraid of it...lol), or the manifold bolts....guess I'll have to get on that this weekend. What kind of damage can long-term pinging do?

from what i have been told pinging ruins the valves and other components of the engine by the engines firing too early before the valves close forcing them to close and leading to that pinging sound

jason94sport if your problem happens while in park then i dont think it is the same problem that i or metallic2001 have but it does sound like rattling at around 2000 to 3000 rpms your rattling sound must be different

The noise Im getting sounds like someone is firing a machine gun(not loud like that but fast and rapid under acceleration havent tried it in park or N I will do so tomorrow and see what happens.
