I am getting this rattleing noise coming from the engine, it sounds like a chain being dragged on the ground. It happens above 2000 rpms and up. I cant hear it if the rpms are lower than that. My truck has 162000 miles if that helps. I have tried seafoam but it only quieted it down, it didnt get rid of it completly. I dont know if its pinging or if its the timing chaing rattleing around. How can I tell?

Have you looked under your truck to see if you are dragging a chain? ;)

Are you using your AC when this happens? Becasue I know on mine at least, it sounds like a chain rattling sound when my AC kicks in.

No the AC is off

maybe the heat shield on the cat? this happened on my moms 99.

I have owned 5 cars and everyone of them developed a rattle from the cat heat shield.

My wifes 2003 Taurus has it as well as my 93 Explorer. Checked both of them this past weekend and found the tack welds on the cat heat shield broken just like every other car I have owned. Start there and then look at the pushrods and valve lifters. Good Luck.
