Ok let me explain how I got to this question. New pads and rotors on back a week ago or so. Started screetching on right back. I took rotor off and parking brakes parts fell out. So that made that noise.

But when I touched the hub(I guess you call it with the studs in it for lug nuts) I noticed it barely moved in and out. I mean barely like maybe 1/16th of a inch it moved in and out. The axle seals were replaced couple years ago. I just never noticed it moved before and I don't know if they are suppose to have any play, no, play or tiny play in them.

omg such relief to hear that from you! Thank you! I will now start putting the brakes back on. I was starting to get concerned and worried. I just never noticed it before

Good luck installing the parking brake shoes. They're a major PITA. It can be done (I've done it) but there's no room to work behind the axel.

It don't need to be inspected until April. And I know a guy. Im from NY lol None are on now lol I might put some on their sometime but all the springs and everything were original. So rusted and bent and broke easily. So I said screw it

Yeah that's the nature of the C-Clip design; all is well. Freaked me out the first time I felt it too before I knew how these rears worked haha.

I almost never use my parking brake (no inspections where I live) but I felt it was important to have it work on my daughter's '00 AWD Mountaineer incase I ever had to remove the front drive shaft. If I ever have to do parking brake shoes again I'd either pull the axels, or pay someone else to do it. It's a truly sucky job.

I have paid dealership to do the parking brake work, because Pep Boys could not make it work correctly.
Still sucks compared to my other cars, but at least it passes inspection.
