I just found this site and became a member, it looks great and I look forward to visiting very often, Im on my second explorer and love it, its a 2002 xlt 4x4.
I need rear wheel bearings, the shop wants $1,100.00 to do it but I can get parts for around $300.00 and enjoy working on it myself but cant find a manual with instructions. Is it that hard to do that I should spend an extra $800.00.

Depends on your skills, available tools, and time to do the work.

I have not done the rear bearings, but the fronts took me about a day, including picking up the parts and an especially large socket wrench, but saved me several hundred bux. Not the easiest job, but not the worst either.

Others here have done the rear bearings, and my understanding is that it is harder than the fronts, but I have no experience with them myself.

Others will chime in eventually, but if you need a quicker answer I recommend that you try the search function. This topic has been discussed here in detail by those in the know and you may even find a posted procedure with pictures and good tips (from the school of lessons learned - those who have actually done the work).

Good Luck.

Cando - I'm planning to rebuild the rear diff tomorrow so I'll send you an update before the week is out. I'll also try to get some pics as well. My local Ford dealer quoted me $1,100-$1,400 depending on what they find when open the diff up. I purchased the bearing kit for $140 and will be using my cousins shop to do the work (AAMCO Center). The good news is if I get into trouble, guys will be there who do this for a living.

I have an 02 EB and replaced the Rear Bearing on the Passenger Side. The
biggest Tool you will need is a 20 Ton Press, going to need that to press out
the old Bearing and press in the new Bearing.

Thanks for the replys, after spending about 3 hrs to get one roter off i decided to try the local dealer, to my suprise they only wanted 600 which I was happy to pay. it only took them about 5 hrs and my trucks like new.

600 sounds about right!!!!
