I bought an 05 Mountaineer 4.6 AWD 93k miles in February. At that time there was no rear diff noise (I'm assuming because it was cold). Once the temps hit the 90s and the summer heat ensued, I have been hearing the dreaded rear whine between 50-60 mph. Foot off the gas, noise goes away. I've read through dozens of threads about this topic, and apologize for creating yet another. Can anyone give me an idea of what signs i should be on the look out for to signal the rear diff is about grenade or become unsafe?
If I do get it rebuilt, are there other things that would make sense to have done at the same time? For example would proactively replacing rear wheel bearing be less expensive to do while the rear diff is being worked on (forgive my stupidity with this one)
Thanks!
