Hi, my '97 Explorer has side play in the rear axle shafts; i.e. when jacked up off the floor the wheel can be pushed in/out by nearly 2mm. I got some new 'c' clips from Ford and once I'd took the diff cover off found them to be the same thickness as the ones already in there. The rubber washers under the 'c' clips are still there. It needs some shims between the side gear and the 'c' clips to take up the slack, but Ford say there arn't any. Has anybody had this problem before? Thanks, Kevin.

I say use a few coins if you cant find the shims, would bet a 20 pence would fit! What have you to loose, least thats 20 pence the wife and kids cant get the hands on!

There is supposed to be in/out play -- 2mm is fine and your axle is fine. There are no shims on the C-clips. Button it up and drive away!
