I want to change my rear differentials fluid. My ABS sensor went bad, and when i took it out i saw small pieces of metal in the oil (flakes). I am about to go on a 3000 mile drive and want to make sure everything is good.

So, what kind of oil should i use? Any additives?

How do i refill it? (through the ABS hole?)

How much fluid do i put in there?

thanks in advance

I recently changed the diff fluid on my '99. Some metal shavings are normal so don't worry, just change it.

It takes 2 3/4 quarts and I used Mobile 1 Synthetic 75W-140 at $6.99 a quart. You'll need 4 ounces of friction modifier if you have a limited slip.

Spray the inside down with some degreaser to get all the shavings out then wipe down with a clean cloth.
Also some gasket sealer when you put it back together.

There is a socket screw (1/4 or 1/2)(not the technical term) just below the ABS connector and on the driver's side facing the driveshaft. That's the fill plug. You'll most likely need some kind of pump with a tube or just a long thin funnel to fill it. It's in a awkward position. The fluid should be right at that hole when filled.

thanks for the reply, how would i know if i have a limited slip differential?

i am unsure.

This should help.
