Im new to rangers and looking to buy a brand new one. I saw that Ford offers and 8.8in rear end with 3:73 gears as an option. Do all rangers have 8.8's or does Ford use other sizes???? Thanks a lot
Yes all current Rangers have the 8.8
The only difference I know of is that the FX4 Rangers have a 31 spline axle as opposed to a 28 spline in all other models.
Rangers currently use 7.5" and 8.8" rear differentials.
The lighter duty 7.5 differential is used only with the 2.3L and the 2WD 3.0L XL/XLT.
The 8.8 (28-spline) diff is used on:
All 4.0L
All 4x4, regardless of engine size
All Sport/Tremor, regardless of engine size
The FX4 Level II uses an 8.8 diff with larger axle tubes and shafts (31-spline).
You can read the axle code from the label on the driver side door or jamb. There is a 2-digit code that will tell you the ring gear size, the axle ratio and whether it is limited slip or conventional.
