I have the rear end whine in my 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 with 71,900 miles. I usually cannot hear the whine because of windows down and sunroof open and music audible and clear. but when its quiet i hear it. Whats the fix for this, should i replace the fluid with synthetic or replace the whole rear end or replace the seal? what has fixed this problem? It doesn't bother me but i would rather not have it break out on the road.

does the whine change when you let you're foot off the gas? rear ends usually last a really, really long time. it seems odd that one would fail with only 71k miles. does it leak oil? try wiggling the pinion and see if there is any play in it.

you could probably make the whine go away by adding a little lucas to it.. not that that's the "right" way to fix it of course.
