Hello, all. I'm an absolute newb to this forum. Actually, first forum ever for all things Sport Trac.

I have a 2003 Sport Trac (2WD).

Bought it used and love it.

Ever since I acquired the vehicle the rear window would only vent and close. It has never opened fully. A friend tried a 'position recovery' and now the window will not do anything.

Is this something that I might be able to correct and get back to proper operation or should I be heading to the local dealer/garage?

Need to know info...I am by no means a gear-head or part-time mechanic although I am willing to give anything a go in the effort of doing repairs myself.

Any help/advice would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'd keep trying the reset procedure since this seems like more of a "controller" issue than "mechanical", and do-overs are free. :D

it might take several tries, but you should end up with a 3-position window!

I had to reset mine once but it was like 10 years ago and all I remember is that I had thought the motor was bad and bought a new one. I had the old one halfway out before I looked at the instructions and saw the reset proceed

Edit: found this...

Ok, I did some searching...

Here's the rear window initialization procedure.

1: Start with the ignition key in the OFF position
2: turn the ignition Key to the ON position
3: Press the rear glass control switch vent button 6 times
4: Turn the ignition key to the OFF position
5: Press the rear glass control switch vent button 6 more times
6: turn the ignition to the ON position. at this point the rear window will move up and down approximatley 20mm (0.8 in). this movement signifies that the rear window glass motor has entered into the initialization mode
7: NOTE: the rear window glass control switch must be held in the UP or DOWN position until the window glass stops moving. failure to hold the switch will end the initialization operation. then the initialization will have to be re-started.

Hold the rear window glass control switch in the full UP position until the rear window glass stops in the full up posistion

Lol - I just noticed in the "Sport Trac FAQ's" sticky thread, the very 1st post has got a bunch of links to window info, including a more detailed version of the proceedure above that might give better results.

So, after five attempts at the procedure, no dice.

The window makes the initial movement after step 6, but doesn't move up or down after that, and does not operate at all after exiting the initialization procedure.

Hmmm...what next?

Did you turn the knob again after step 6? It doesn't really seem clear in the instructions, but step 7 seems to be saying that after the glass moves down a little bit in step 6, you then turn the knob eithrr way and hold it until the window comes to a stop at top or bottom, then release the knob...

...or is that what you did, and it just didn't move? were you still within the time limit?

Edit: if you used the above steps, check the FAQ steps for the time limit.

If it STILL doesn't work, I guess you have to decide if an operational window is worth the price of a new motor...
