I'm reassembling my clutch pack on my 91 X and have a question. The kit I got from bulkparts.com has several clutch discs in it, but 2 of them are slightly different. They are the same physical dimensions, but the inner teeth on the clutch packs are different. The two in question have two teeth, a space, then two teeth. Physically they look compatible with the other clutch discs, but the others have a continuous row of teeth all around the inner circumference, while these have a gap after every 2 teeth. Is this ok or are these 2 for something "special" inside the tranny.

I am sure that the disks are different for a reason. Perhaps, bulkparts.com has a tech support number you can call on Monday.

Try searching on this board, or maybe a Ranger or F150 bulletin board for info.

I think you also may be able to purchase and download a service manual - I will try to find the link.

I have the ATSG service manuals.. both the original and the updated one for the A4LD and dont see anything in here about this difference in clutch discs. I really need to get this together today also.. darnit.

Answered my own question.

The 3 total clutch discs that are different are for the OD clutch assembly.

I had not taken them apart when I originally posted this. Now I see whats up.

The cleaning phase is almost done. I'm about ready to start putting it all back together and I'm starting to get nervous. Not that it will be a super hard job to do or anything, but it hasnt gotten hard yet and I am not looking forward to the hard part...

I have rebuilt engines, rear ends, carburators (I am only 40!), and manual transmissions - but never an auto - would like to try it sometime - on someone else's trans of course!!:)

Likewise.. 2 stroke motors, 4 stroke motors, clutches, rear ends, etc..

never an automagic tranny. They are supposed to be the hardest part of a vehicle to rebuild but so far I dont see why...

It's like anything else, I guess. If I had the time, energy, and space to rip one apart and rebuild/assemble a few times (applying with some common sense of course), I am sure I would make it work!!

I just put mine back together, and if I ever go down and pick up the pump and bellhousing Ill finish it.

I didnt really find it that difficult to reassemble. At times it was hard to get all of the washers to stay where they needed to be, but a little patience and it wasnt hard.

Glad you figured out the clutch plate situation.
