Has anyone rebuilt there own? If so how hard is it? Are special(expensive) tools required? Is it to difficult for someone who is moderately, mechanicly inclined to do? Will the rebuild be as good as replacing it with a Ford rebuilt transmission? Mine will sometimes spin up and not engage in drive when it is cold out or if it is on an incline. Once it is warm it runs fine. Any ideas on what it could be? Maybe I don't need a rebuild? 95 Explorer with 115,000. To get it replaced by Ford with a 3yr warranty it will cost around 2600. This is a lot of money for me. The parts to rebuild it should come in under 500. Would I also need a new tourque converter? If so do they make brand new units or do you have to get a rebuilt one? Any help is appreciated! Sorry about ranting(whining) a little about my Ford in some previous posts. I think it will be a good vehicle once I get the probs fixed. Thanks!

with that many miles i would get a rebuilt torque converter, for 2600 sounds like they are gonna put a reman tranny in maybe a jasper with that kind of warranty. If you have the money you can go that route but a rebuild at an independant shop would be much cheaper than 2600.

If you do a search you will find many great threads on transmission rebuilds, DIY on here.
