Recall 24S02 2011-2019 Ford Explorer SUV Recalled Over 'A'-PillarTrim Piece Issue

Has anyone tried the precision brand molding kits on rockauto? Their video talks about redesigning the mold to be thicker and more durable but there are 3 different versions with different prices and no information on the difference between them. I should probably just hold out for the recall but I'm really tired of looking at the missing molds.

Welcome to the Forum.
The issue with these mouldings isn't the durability or thickness, it's how they are fastened to the vehicle. The clips don't seem to hold them in place on some of the Explorers, especially the earlier 5th gens.

My case was that the 3M double stick tape did not hold the forward edge in place, it kept coming off!

I'm not aware of double sided tape being used on the 'A' pillar. They used plastic clips. I think the 'B' pillar used tape.

Precision emailed me today. Apparently the ones ending in "P" and "PLR" are for police vehicles.

Curious as what the difference is?

Mine had both, white little clips on the middle and black ones on the ends, and on the edge it had 3m tape

Perhaps they added the tape later. If you check out the pictures here, there doesn't seem to be any tape used.

The tape is on the part that attaches to/covers the part shown.

The precision moldings from rock auto arrived today. I installed them according to their instructional video and it's was fairly straight forward. I did manage to break the very top clip on the drivers side molding thus rendering it useless. The passenger side went on perfect and is holding rock solid per my first test drive. Unfortunately I had to order a pair of outer moldings from rock auto again. They don't sell this brand individually and it was nearly the same price for a single side other brand vs sticking with a pair of the same brand. Anyway, now we wait again.

I made my appointment. They came out. I have no idea what they did. The trim is still loose and held on by an adhesive.

So much for the notification advising the parts are available and ready to fix.

After 6 weeks my rock auto moldings are still holding strong.

I had installed the precision moldings on my '12 Explorer. Even after allowing it to sit in the sun, the rubber did not sit against the glass allowing wind to blow up underneath them (which caused the vibrations I was hearing before I decided to replace them). The plastic tab at the top broke on one of mine also.

I ended up picking up a tube of Black Silicone for RV, Autos and sealed the rubber to the windshield. I also used it to secure the tope of the molding that I broke the tab on (note that these are not reusable anyway if you remove them). It actually looked great when I was done and I wished I had done it sooner.

Found out they confirmed my explorer was affected and they ordered the parts (no eta).

I was so stoked when this recall became official but no surprise that they've continued to push back the ETA of any fix. I think best case scenario theyre gonna treat it like the roof trim recall and just glob on some super glue or tape.

I had been looking for solutions way before they went live with the recall and came across a company that offered the seemingly best replacements for us. Can't remember the name of the top of my head but I'll find it asap and share. Their kit pretty much just handles the plastic clip issue by utilizing metal ones instead. i'll do some digging and get back to you with the link!

What about folks who already had there outer moldings fly/break off??

We have even lost a lower bracket weatherstripping as a result of a missing outer molding!! I had already bought new Ford lower brackets, with new Ford weatherstrips as a result, then this recall came out literally the DAY I was to order the outer moldings!

Check with Ford or your dealer about any possible reimbursement if you have the paperwork.

It appears that this product is sold under multiple rebrands and even the same pictures used to show it.
It also looks like some kits include the left or right trim moulding.

And more... not sure how long these google image search links will work, or if the forum code will break them immediately:
