Letter came in the mail today. I didn't type every section, just the important ones.

Customer Satisfaction Program 12B36

What is the issue? On your vehicle, contamination can build up on the internal electrical contacts of the engine cooling fan motors, causing the fans to be inoperative. Inoperative engine cooling fans could lead to high engine temperature gauge readings and reduced air conditioning performance. Continued operation of the vehicle could result in illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) and eventually cause the engine to automatically enter derate (reduced power) mode.

What will Ford and your dealer do? In the interest of customer satisfaction, FMC has authorized your dealer to inspect the operation of the engine cooling fans on your vehicle and replace them if necessary. In addition, your dealer will reprogram your vehicle's PCM to prevent contamination from accumulating in the future.

This service will be performed free of charge (Parts and labor) under the terms of this program.

This CSP will be in effect until May 1, 2013 regardless of mileage. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

What should you do? Please call your dealer without delay and request a service date for Customer Satisfaction Program 12B36. Prove your VIN.

Do you need a rental vehicle? If your dealer determines that the cooling fans on your vehicle require replacement, your dealer is authorized to provide a rental vehicle for your personal transportation at no charge while parts are on order.

I got the same letter. Will be taking the letter, and the Ex to the dealership this week or next.

I have an appointment scheduled for Thu am. Has anyone got this done yet? I have the engine squeal at shutdown. I have not popped the hood and watched yet while the engine shuts down to see what it may be but curious if anyone had the squeal and if this recall fixed it? I think someone mentioned the squeal was the fan but I'm not 100% sure.

What I dont get is how does reprogramming the pcm prevent contamination on the contacs??

The fan squeal, I believe, is covered under TSB 11-7-21 COOLING FAN NOISE, LACK OF A/C AND/OR OVERHEAT CONDITION.
Did you mention that to the dealer when you booked your appointment?

I'm also getting the 12B36 done Thursday.

There are many posts about this under the thread Recall???

I too got this letter...may see if dealer can do it tomorrow

did not mention the TSB...I will call tomorrow and mention it to get it all done at once...thanks Peterk9

I also received a letter on the 12B36 Customer Satisfaction Program for my 2011 Explorer. Will be interesting to see what my dealer says, since they just did the MFT software update a few weeks ago.and left the engine running.

They had the engine running the entire time and guess they were checking the operation of the fans while doing the update. Nothing was mentioned about a PCM program change on the work order.

Wish they would just do all the TSB's and whatever to bring it up to the 2013 vehicle spec.

The 12B36 program is just a recent release. I too had my update done a month ago and they also had placed a large floor fan in front of the vehicle while it ran and the update was done.
As for doing all the TSB's that would entail doing a lot of unnecessary work and extra cost. The only TSB that I have had done is 11-11-12 RAIN SENSITIVE WIPERS - UN-COMMANDED OR PHANTOM WIPE ON DRY GLASS - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 6/26/2011.
That issue has actually come back since the MFT upgrade, although only 3 times.

I too just got the letter. Had the fans replaced 2 weeks ago under the earlier tsb. Will have to check with dealer to see about reprograming the Ex's PCM.

Cory, Any thoughts about reprograming PCM and how thats suppose to help?

Hey guys,

Keep us in the loop on how the update goes. Please don’t hesitate to drop me a line via PM if you need assistance.

GWA1,

I’m not a technician, but this updates the PCM fan strategy and the fans are controlled by the PCM.

Cory

Got the letter. Don't know when I'll go in for the repair. Hopefully before May 2013.

Will wait for feedback

I too received the letter yesterday. will wait for feedback from some of you who are visiting the dealer shops on Thursday.

Got my letter Monday but my cooling fans have been fine for a year. I'll wait for next oil change to get it done.

Brought mine in yesterday to get the A piller fixed, and MFT update. My dealer was pro active and took care of the service bulleten on the their own .They replaced all the fans and re programmed the fan PCM as well.

Took mine in for an oil change today and to get the 12B36 program done.
Lucky day! I was advised they had a special on, $14.95 for oil and filter and 99 point check. Also found out my alignment is just on the edge of specs.
Will address that in the Fall.
The (12B36) programming of the PCM will periodically put the fans on at high speed to prevent possible corrsion of the contacts. Apparently the fans are not always on when the engine is up to temperature as I had thought.

Peter

Thanks for the clarification Peter :)

Thanks Peter, received my letter yesterday for MY 12

vehicle at the dealer as I write this getting this PCM fan stategy update.

Peter

And this hopefully does not mean that the life of the fans will be shortened and fail shortly after we reach the out of warranty period
