Found an easy way to do this which will not damage the seals when I went to replace my wheel bearing.

A Pitman arm puller works well on the upper ball joint. This device is used to pull the arm off the bottom of conventional steering boxes (prior to rack an pinion).

For the lower I rented a large 2 jaw puller from Autozone.

I also bought a tool from KD tools which separates the tie rod end from the knuckle. This cost about $50 but was an excellent investment.

Using these tools prevents damage to the boots so they can be re-used.
