Removing pins from elect conn shell

Hi

I'm in the middle of replacing the rear speed sensor on the transfer case. (Its leaking).

The sensor wires go into a hard shell connector which also contains circuits for the shift motor and front sensor. The new part just has the wires with the connector pins that go into the shell.

How do I get the pins out of the shell? Usually you want to depress some tabs on the pin that lock into the shell. On these pins there arent any tabs, just a recess. The tab is built into the shell, but I can't figure out how to release it.

Jeez this is gonna be tough in this medium.
There is little tabs in the plastic shell that hold the metal connector. usually to either side. the trick that works for me it pull the rubber seal out from the back side of the connector , now find some thing like a big sewing needle to go in to the left and the right of the metal connector. A little , no , make that a lot of finesse and you should be able to walk the wire out.
It is not too easy , but it is possible

This connector has a hard plastic shell on the back. Im not sure if I can get it off.


I've taken lots of shells apart where you push a hollow tube over the pin from the inside of the connector, but it doesn't work with this one because there is a hard piece of plastic on the inside that prevents the tube from going any further.

There is a slot on one side of the pin on the inside, but I can't seen to release it this way.

The problem which is making this more complicated is that there is one wire which goes directly into the transfer case with no way to remove it. Therefore I have to get the pins out while the shift motor and sensor are still attached to the transfer case (by the wires)

figured it out

I waited until daylight and thought about it overnight.

Just in case anyone is interested...Im talking about a black hard shell connector with round pins which snap into the shell.

The trick is to pull out the red piece of plastic that separates the pins. It snaps into the shell but is easy to remove by grabbing with needle nose pliers. Once the red plastic piece is out, you can see the piece of the shell which holds the pins. Use a needle or very small screwdriver to pull the plastic away from the pin and voila.

Good design, but nothing in any of my manuals gives any kind of clue on how to do this.

you were talking about releasing it from the back of the connector, but on this type there is a piece of plastic which doesnt come off (i think it is glued on)

that made me realize that I had to be able to release it from the front side somehow, because there is no way to get it from the back
